OPPONENTS of plans to build a gas installation in the country south of the Malvern Hills are holding a public meeting on Saturday (April 10) to keep residents abreast of the latest developments.

The Campaign Against the Pressure Reduction Installation (CAPRI) was formed in 2006 after power firm National Grid announced its intention to build the installation near Corse, to link the UK's gas network with a pipeline carrying imported gas from the Welsh port of Milford Haven.

National Grid's original plan was rejected, so it applied a second time for a site 400 yards away from the first. This application was rejected by Tewkesbury Borough Council in February this year, and National Grid subsequently announced that it intends to appeal.

Now CAPRI has called a meeting at Eldersfield Lawn School, Corse Lawn, onm Saturday at 10am. Present will be MP Mark Harper, borough councillor Philip Awford and representatives of Tewkesbury Borough Council, the Campaign to Protect Rural England and CAPRI.

CAPRI secretary Joseph Gabbott said the group this week met the barrister it will instruct for the appeal hearing, which is scheduled for July.

He said: "People are very supportive and feel very strongly that It's arrogant and presumptuous of National Grid to press ahead with this, given that this is the second application to be rejected by a planning authority."
