LOCAL estate agent Andrew Grant has slammed an increase in stamp duty to five per cent for properties over £1m as “a disgrace”.
Mr Grant feels the planned increase, announced in Chancellor Alistair Darling’s budget last week, is an ‘attack on middle England.’ He added that, while he welcomes the chancellor’s decision to suspend stamp duty for first-time buyers on properties under £250,000, very few will actually benefit because of the reality of mortgage restrictions.
He also fears that the ‘special offer’ could bring a collapse of the market at its close.
