PUPILS at the Wyche Primary School held a wacky hair day to help a Malvern woman volunteering in Africa later this year.

Abi Izzard, aged 23, has to raise £1,900 to finance her 12-week trip to Tanzania, which she plans to spend working at an orphanage in the village of Mwanza, near Lake Victoria.

Because she used to go to the Wyche, pupils agreed to help her by turning up with wild and wonderful hairdos and raising £99.95.

Abi, who works at Malvern Link firm Neoperl, said she is very grateful to the school and to all the other people who have helped her.

"I just want to say a big thank-you to all of them," she said. "I've got nearly £1,000 and it's thanks to everyone who's helped me.

"I've wanted to go to Africa for a long time, so I looked for something useful I could do and found this orphanage through Volunteer Africa."
