On our last trip of the year, 52 of our members enjoyed a day at Hardwick Hall, Chesterfield, one of the most splendid houses in England, being the former home of the famous Bess of Hardwick, and her granddaughter, Arbella, niece of Mary Queen of Scots, confined to the house to avoid her possible accession to the Throne following the death of Elizabeth1. Bess first built Hardwick in the 1550’s with its huge windows and high ceilings. The many, and rich, tapestries adorning the walls colour the rooms, mostly unaltered since construction. Walled courtyard, gardens, orchard and parkland with its long horn cattle all added interest to make a most enjoyable outing.

Our next meeting will be on Friday, November 11 at Croome Court when Pamela Hurle will be talking to us about Stanbrook Abbey.
