A CHARITY which helps children with life-threatening illnesses has received a £4,000 boost.

The cheque was presented to Acorns Children’s Hospice on behalf of the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

Mandie Fitzgerald, community fund-raiser with Acorns, said: “This is a fantastic donation which goes towards helping to provide care and support to local life-limited and life-threatened children and their families.”

The donation is a surplus from the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management’s metals recycling scheme, which Worcester City Council ’s crematorium is part of.

The recycling of metals resulting from cremation is only carried out with the written consent of each bereaved family.

Following the cremation of a deceased person, the cremated remains contain metals from the coffin and from orthopaedic implants, such as hip and knee replacement joints.

Coun Roger Knight, Worcester City Council cabinet member for safer and greener, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to make this donation to a very worthwhile cause.”
