Everyone in Malvern will be delighted to hear that we are to have the pleasure of seeing Mr and Mrs Laurence Irving in two of their plays, which has had such exceedingly successful runs in London. Mr Irving will be doubly welcomed for his late fater's sake and for his own; and Miss Hackney, who was at school in Malvern, is looking forward to renewing her acquaintance with the town. The three days (August 15th, 16th and 17th) they are to be at the Assembly Rooms, will be red-letter days for those who love good drama.

Elsie Tanner of the ITV series Coronation Street was a surprise guest on Saturday for members of the Malvern branch of the Royal Naval Association at their HQ, the Tudor Hotel. Miss Patricia Phoenix, who plays Elsie, had come on from a Worcester fete which she had opened, to meet members informally in the bar parlour of the Tudor Hotel. Mr J Brown (chairman) welcomed the TV personality, who quickly made herself at home. After refreshments and lively conversation, Miss Phoenix left Malvern for the North.

Safety chiefs have warned of the "grave danger" of climbing quarries on the Hills following the dramatic cliff-top rescue of a 14-year-old German girl. The girl, a student at the Abbey International College, was hauled to safety after she "froze" on a steep quarry face off Jubilee Drive, near British Camp. Firemen believe she was out walking with a group of friends when she got into difficulties attempting to scale the quarry and suffered a panic attack. Last week's rescue was the fourth since June and, if 1987 is a typical year, there will be several more this summer.
