£500,000 is to be pumped into improving facilities at Malvern Link railway station.

The cash boost is coming from Worcestershire County Council, which has been awarded £14.2 million from the Department of Transport to help implement the first phase of its Worcester Transport Strategy (WTS).

The first details of the scheme, which includes replacing the two station buildings with new ones “more in keeping with the historic and heritage feel” of the original site, were unveiled this week.

Other improvements being proposed include new lighting, increased car-parking capacity, new toilets and booking office, and disabled and pedestrian access from Osborne Road opposite the new Malvern Community Hospital.

Malvern residents have a chance to find out more about the scheme and ask questions during a four-week public exhibition at the station, starting on Monday.

Council officers will be on hand between 7.30am to 7.30pm on Monday, June 18 to answer questions about the proposals.

Coun John Smith, cabinet Member for highways and transport, said the investment plan was “really good news” for the station.

“The proposals are looking to make things better for those using the station.

“It’s also hoped it will encourage more people to use this method of sustainable transport, helping with the overall aim of cutting congestion on our roads, as well as opening up economic barriers in the area,” he said. A planning application for the work will follow the exhibition, and the county council needs to have all permissions in place by October 31 to meet the Department of Transport’s criteria for funding.

It is then planned that the work will be carried out in 2013, making it the first WTS Phase One project to be completed.

Improvements are also planned at Worcester’s Foregate Street station and a similar public exhibition begins on Monday.
