I was taken by your piece in the Gazette recently about the problem of speeding motorists in Suckley Parish, in particular the views aired by Keely Charles, of Alfrick Pound.

I live on the Acton Beauchamp Road where speeding is rife more so than in some of the villages as there is no speed limit so one faces real danger every minute of every day.

I have, over the past five years, tried to get something done about it but have come up against breathtaking inertia and bureaucracy.

I know the parish council likewise are ‘on the case’ but I suspect they too will face an uphill struggle.

A frequent response from the authorities is that as there have been no serious injury accidents on this stretch of road so, all is well.

I liken this to them saying we will not put water in the swimming pool until someone has jumped off the top board and broken their back.

Speeding in the countryside is a serious problem and before someone is hurt, nay killed, in an accident, measures must be taken.

These measures must be taken now and not sometime in the future as the result of such an accident occurring.

I therefore challenge the police, county council and highways authority to get their heads out of the sand, start talking to each other and drill down on speeding motorists.

Thereby they will be making Suckley Parish, and indeed other rural communities, safer places to live.
