AN intimate evening of music with a northern accent is on the cards at Malvern Theatres next weekend.

Mercury Prize-nominated Tynesiders The Unthanks, who centre around Rachel and Becky Unthank, play the Forum Theatre on Saturday, April 28, from 7.30pm.

Since taking their current moniker in 2009, the group has been busy building a reputation as honest, young storytellers performing outside the constraints of time, forging links between folk worlds old, new and other.

They are influenced as much by the minimalist eccentricity of Steve Reich, Antony and The Johnsons, Robert Wyatt and Miles Davis, as they are by their native north-east England.

Former NME journalist Paul Morley was moved to describe them as possessing “a sensationally graceful sound that can be epic and subdued, dreamy and specific, as well as supernaturally ancient and defiantly modern” on the pages of the Observer Music Magazine.

Performing as a quintet, the group will draw on albums such as Last and Here’s the Tender Coming in an intimate and closeup evening.

Support will come from Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell.

The Newcastle-based duo met while studying folk and traditional music at Newcastle University.

They will be performing songs from their debut album Kite, described by Lauren Laverne as “absolutely gorgeous”.

Tickets are available priced at £16 (concessions £14).
