A SECURITY guard had a cash box snatched from him at a Malvern supermarket.

The robbery happened just after noon on Monday at Morrisons, Roman Way.

The van, owned by security company Loomis UK, was visiting the supermarket when the guard was pushed from behind and the cash box he was carrying was stolen at about 12.10pm.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the robbery.

The main offender was white, around 6ft 2in tall, stocky and wearing dark clothing.

He was accompanied by up to three other men who were sitting in a waiting car, a darkgrey Peugeot 307. All the men are thought to be in their 30s, and one was wearing a bright orange jacket and had lightcoloured hair.

The getaway car was later seen travelling along Spring Lane in Malvern and the grey cash box was witnessed being thrown from the moving vehicle and has since been recovered.

On Tuesday, a member of the public tipped-off police about a car parked at Victoria Park in Victoria Park Road off the Malvern Road.

Officers have now confirmed that car – which had been stolen elsewhere in the country – is the one used by the robbers and is now being pored over by detectives for clues.

Detective Inspector Richard Rees of south Worcestershire CID said: “Thankfully it appears no weapons or serious violence were used in this robbery. However, it is totally unacceptable for security workers to be targeted in this way and we are mobilising a lot resources to find the offenders and their vehicle.

“Both the car and the cash box are being forensically tested for evidence that could lead us to those involved.

“Their recovery indicates the offenders spent time in the roads around Victoria Park and I would like to appeal for any witnesses who saw a group of men acting suspiciously around the Spring Lane or Pickersleigh Avenue area.

“Did you see these men driving around the area, dumping the cash box or possibly transferring to another vehicle, which we believe may have happened?

“One of them was wearing a distinctive bright orange top.”

Police can be contacted via the non-emergency number 101 or information can be passed on anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A spokesman for Loomis UK said: “The guard was shaken, but he’s all right. We would urge anyone who witnessed this incident to get in touch with police.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: “We can confirm that no customers were injured and the store remained open as normal. We will help police with their enquiries.”
