COMMUNITY groups and volunteers in Upton are busy planning celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this summer.

The programme is quickly coming together, with plenty of events for people of all ages.

Celebrations are set to kick off on Friday, June 1, with a street party at Price’s Lane hosted by Upton Primary School.

One of the high points will be the following day with a jubilee party cruise on the Severn aboard The Conway Castle.

The cruise will feature a hog roast supper and disco, and advance booking is necessary by calling 01684 593112.

Taking place on the same day is a civic service in the parish church, St Peter and St Paul, with Hanley Voices supporting the choir in a programme of music that organisers hope will include stirring anthems including Zadok the Priest and the Hallelujah Chorus.

Later that day, the church will be the venue for a ceilidh with bar and food, another ticketed event.

Another big event will take place on the Sunday, an ecumenical cricket match, including arts and crafts exhibits in the pavilion, where there will also be a big screen to see the royal procession on the Thames.

On the Monday, the riverside will be the venue for a Sing Upton event, with patriotic songs, the mayor giving the loyal address and a toast to the Queen, followed by a children’s street party in Lower High Street, senior citizens’ party in memorial hall, jazz in the sports pavilion in the evening and a grand finale as the beacon is lit on the Malvern Hills.

And across the weekend, there will be arts exhibitions, concerts and other events at various venues through the town.

Peter Webb, of the town’s tourism association, said: “We’re still eager to hear from people or groups who want to get involved.” To find out more, call 01684 599552.
