TWO 16-year-olds from Malvern pledged their allegiance to Queen and country yesterday (Thursday, December 15).

Nicole Francis and Geoffrey Holland were among the new recruits taking their first step towards a military career during the Army attestation ceremony at the Army Careers Information Office, in Foregate Street, Worcester.

Having taken the oath of allegiance the youngsters will start their training at the Army Foundation College in the new year.

Nicole Francis, who is entering the Royal Artillery as a gunner crewman, said: ”I am really excited and I have to be really tough when I get in but I am going to miss my family and friends. I have been around horses all my life, which is a big bonus.”

Former Dyson Perrins CE Academy pupil Geoffrey Holland is also entering the Royal Artillery as a gunner crewman.

He said: “I feel really good because I’ve always wanted to join the Army and I’m really looking forward to starting my training. My uncle was in the army and my dad was in the TA for about eight years.”

Mayor Ken Kennedy, Army recruitment officer for the region, said: “The Army Foundation College provides a great opportunity for young people to train as soldiers, while also allowing them to gain further qualification and continue with their education.

“In addition to gaining basic military training they will also have the chance to improve their numeracy and literacy skills and earn an apprenticeship.

“Today marks an important step for all of our new recruits as they get set to start their working life in the Army. They can look forward to exciting times ahead and I wish them all the best for the future.”
