"THE past week has seen Upton-upon-Severn suffering from an abnormal flood for the second time this year," reported the Gazette 50 years ago.

"Warning of the impending danger was given to householders by the police on Sunday afternoon, and by Wednesday, the River Severn had reached a level of nearly 16 feet above normal.

"With the rising of the river there came the isolation of the town, all roads leading into it being flooded to a depth of over two feet.

"As the river was still rising, Upton-on-Severn Rural District Council arranged for two army lorries to stand by for the purpose of ferrying people in and out of the town.

"The fire station was flooded and fire vehicles were moved so they would be available to deal with any emergency that might arise."
