DESPITE conditions being less than perfect, there was a very good turnout once again on Malvern United Angling Association's new stretch of the Severn at Holdfast for the Chairman's Cup.

The bright sunshine and high temperature, allied with a low and clear river, meant that low weights could be on the cards.

As expected the resident bream were unwilling to feed and Colin Shaw needed only half a dozen perch and a small skimmer caught on the feeder to take the cup with 2-8-0 from peg four. It was a welcome win for Colin whose trophy cabinet had remained empty since his junior cup win some 15 years ago.

In second spot was John Barr on peg 12. John decided to fish the long rod and trot a stick float down his swim, a much neglected art but one that proved successful as he landed a nice chub of 1-8-0 and a few bleak for a total of 2-0-0.

In third place was Richard Gilks from peg nine. Richard began on the feeder without success but a switch to the pole at 10 metres provided instant results with a perch coming to the net, followed by a roach and a nice chub.

Bites on the pole line dried up so Richard then fished for bleak on the surface to end with 1-8-0.

The club is holding its annual outing to Somerset on September 18, this year to fish the River Huntspill.

A coach is available and the cost is £20 to include day ticket and coach. A stop for a meal will be made on the way back. Any members interested contact Mick Perks on 01684 561777.
