TWO events in Malvern have raised thousands of pounds for the forces charity, Help the Heroes.

More than 80 walkers took to the Malvern Hills on Sunday. They were led by RAF engineer Dave Lewis, who was inspired to raise funds after convalescing at a Ministry of Defence hospital.

He said: “I would like to thank all the walkers who took part, sponsors, bands, the Mount Pleasant Hotel, Malvern Conservators and everyone who assisted on the day. I don’t know yet how much we have raised but it should be around £3,000.”

Mr Lewis already planning next year’s event. Anyone wishing to take part, sponsor or just support the event can get in touch with him by calling 07793 058457 or emailing davelewis547@hotmail.com.

Meanwhile landlord Duncan Ironmonger invited visitors to enjoy cream teas and a host of refreshments at The Swan at Newland on the same day.

Mr Ironmonger is supporting bride-to-be Nicola Guiver, who will be running a marathon while on honeymoon in Cyprus in February in aid of Help for Heroes.

Miss Guiver became a keen supporter of the forces charity when her fiance joined the army and began his training with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment in March.

Sunday’s event attracted a large turnout and also featured a raffle with a host of prizes donated by local businesses.

Miss Guiver said: “I could not have asked for a better day and we managed to raise £866 between the cream tea sales and the raffle.

“I just want to thank everyone who came to the event and supported our charity and the local businesses who contributed to the raffle.”
