WALKERS have been urge to take part in the Malvern mayor's charity challenge.

The mayor’s Peaks Challenge takes place on  Saturday, May 4,  with funds raised going to the Malvern mayor Clive Hooper’s, charity, St Richard’s Hospice.

There will be a choice of two routes to cater for a range of abilities. Dogs are welcome too, and will receive a rosette on completion, while all walkers will receive a t-shirt in their entrance pack and a medal at the end.

For those who like a challenge, the “end to end” long walk of 18km (6-8 hours) takes you over the 17 peaks of the Malvern Hills.  Registration will be in Priory Park, from 8am with coaches leaving from 8.30am to take walkers to the starting point on the Bromesberrow Estate.

The short walk is 9km (3-5 hours) taking in the main section of the Malvern Hills and including the highest peak of the hills, The Worcestershire Beacon.  Registration for this walk is in Priory Park from 10.15am until 11.30am and a shuttle bus will take walkers to the starting point at British Camp.

Coun Hooper said, “People who have done this event in previous years and to whom I have spoken, all seemed to have enjoyed the challenge and have derived a great sense of satisfaction and achievement from competing. I am filled with admiration for those who so enthusiastically take part in the event, so much so that we have many who come back year after year. To those who have not taken part before, I do say ‘Try it out this year!’”

Malvern Town Clerk, Linda Blake said: “Malvern Town Council are delighted to be running The Peaks Challenge again. This event provides a superb outdoor walking challenge along the beautiful Malvern Hills, while raising much needed funds for St Richards Hospice. A huge thank you to Vertu Motors who are sponsoring the event, T-shirts and medals as this allows all funds collected to go directly to the charity.
