Harriett Baldwin MP joined Clifton residents to pick up litter dumped along a busy stretch of road.

The West Worcestershire MP joined villagers to promote the annual Keep Britain Tidy campaign, which encourages community groups and businesses to collect at least one bag of litter during the fortnight-long initiative from until Sunday, March 31.

Clifton residents, who have formed a group to clean up their community, participated in a one-hour clean-up along the road between Clifton and Upper Sapey, collecting discarded items such as bottles of spirits, fast food wrappers, disposable coffee cups and even a car exhaust.

Mrs Baldwin said: "It was great to see so many big-hearted villagers from the beautiful village of Clifton upon Teme come out on a rainy Friday to help pick litter.

“The Great British Spring Clean is a national initiative to encourage more people to clean up their own local environment and there are many local groups who brave the elements to keep their location clean.

“If you want to start your own, both Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon District Council can help you Adopt A Road and provide equipment."

She continued: "Litter is something which can be a scourge on our rural and urban areas and I am heartened that there are so many volunteers already out there helping to keep our streets clean.

"Report fly-tipping too where fines have been increased for these environmental crooks.

"It's quite satisfying to collect a bag of litter and anyone can get involved from quite a young age."
