An historic landmark and a town centre sculpture are to be lit up purple to raise awareness of a deadly cancer.

The North Malvern Clock Tower and the buzzards in Rosebank Gardens will be lit up in November as part of the Purple Lights for Pancreatic Cancer campaign.

The campaign, which centres around World Pancreatic Cancer Day on November 16, puts a spotlight on the disease.

According to Pancreatic Cancer UK, half of people with pancreatic cancer die within three months of their diagnosis and fewer than seven per cent survive more than five years.

Town councillors last night (Wednesday, October 11) approved a plan to light up the faces of the clock tower as well as the buzzards sculpture, which was lit up purple in November 2021 for the same cause.

The sculpture has also been lit up for other causes, including last year when it turned gold to celebrate 50 years of Malvern Community Action.

Town clerk Linda Blake told Wednesday’s meeting the council had been approached by a member of the public for whom pancreatic cancer is a cause close to their heart.

She said turning the monuments purple would be “quite a simple process”.

“For the buzzards, it’s just about putting a filter over the lights,” the clerk said. “And for the clock tower we need to change the bulbs behind the clock faces.”

Other buildings being lit up purple for World Pancreatic Cancer Day include Worcester Guildhall, Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, the Twin Sails Bridge in Poole, Bristol City Hall, Edinburgh Castle, Belfast City Hall and Rochester Cathedral Spire.

The Purple Lights campaign is encouraging people to get involved, either by contacting a prominent local landmark or by lighting up their own home.
