A terrified cat and her kittens dumped during a storm is on the mend with mum and babies now doing well.

The cat has been named Agnes as she was found with her babies, dumped behind some bins, the night Storm Agnes was raging on Wednesday, September 27.

Agnes and her five kittens are now receiving care at The Holdings, the animal and rehoming centre in Kempsey managed by the Worcester and Mid-Worcestershire Branch of the RSPCA.

Claire Wood, a volunteer at the centre and the branch's social media co-ordinator, said: "We cannot comprehend the number of animals we are seeing dumped in this manner right now.

Agnes's kittens are approximately one week old and all named after this season's storms.

"Thankfully, Agnes and her brood are safe now, but we despair at the thought of all of the other animals who are being abandoned in this heartless way.

"If you have a cat who has recently given birth, or indeed any animal you can no longer cope with for whatever reason, please, please don't just turf them out onto the streets. Yes, we are stretched. We are usually at capacity. But we WILL do all that we can to offer help and support.

And to prevent Agnes' situation from occurring in the first place, the best thing you can to is to neuter your animals.

"We offer a £10 neuter and chip scheme for cats for anyone struggling due to low income...please email admin@rspcaworcester.org.uk for more info."

The Worcester News understands the cat and her kittens were abandoned in the Redditch area.

The cat and her kittens are not up for adoption at this stage as they need to be kept together for at least six to seven weeks for them to enjoy the best chance.

Ms Wood said: "They are all doing okay. She (the mum) was very stressed to begin with and they were losing weight and we were quite concerned.

"The smallest kitten is the one that gave us the most concern but they're all holding on in there and starting to gain weight."
