STAFF at a village pub in Worcestershire are celebrating after being named one of the best boozers in the country.

The Rose & Crown in Severn Stoke was named Marstons Pub of the Year at the Great British Pub Awards.

The community-spirited pub, which has suffered three floods in as many years, fought off competition from five other pubs to scoop the prize.

Also shortlisted for the award were the Cock & Magpie in Bewdley, Black Bull Hotel Old Lango in Blackburn, Holly Bush in Derby, Royal Oak in Wolverhampton and Star Inn in Buxton.

Bar manager Kirsten Fyfe said: “I couldn’t believe it. I’m really proud of everyone - we’ve got a good team here.

“We flood every year, usually about January or February time so we have to refurbish the pub every year.

“We’ve worked really hard to turn it around again and we have the new outside bar area as well now.

“It’s great seeing the regulars, building relationships and working together as a team.”

The pub, which was taken on by landlord Andrew Goodall three years ago, puts itself at the heart of the community in Severn Stoke.

This includes paying for the village’s Christmas tree each year and getting involved in the annual lights switch-on event.

Mr Goodall, speaking after the pub’s nomination, said the Rose & Crown has come back “stronger and better” from each flood thanks to its staff.

The Great British Pub Awards took place on Tuesday, September 19 at Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.
