FEARS of a "tragedy" have been raised by a Malvern resident who says speeding and traffic may cause a disaster in a busy town road.

Caroline Withington called for a reduction in the speed limit on Court Road at Worcestershire County Council's full council meeting on Thursday, September 14.

It follows a  crash in August which saw a man arrested on suspicion of drink driving and on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

A picture taken at the scene of the crash shows a car on its roof in the middle of the road.

Caroline Withington said: "An incident in Court Road on Friday, August 18 involving a car which ended up on its roof narrowly missed a resident walking down the road.

"It could have killed or caused life-changing injuries. Sadly the Church Street Malvern fatality serves as a major warning.

"There will be a tragedy on Court Road if the speed, number and type of vehicle using it is not addressed. Three school communities use it in order to get to and from school.

"The speed limit needs reducing as drivers are not taking the time to look and see if they need to give way, causing gridlock.

"Brave determined parents walk, cycle and 'scoot' their children to schools on a designated cycleway, but you have to be very brave to cycle up Court Road. We really need a 20mph limit at least."

Another resident, who was raising an issue to the council, also referenced the parking situation at Court Road, saying it was "at capacity".

Cllr Mike Rouse, cabinet member with responsibility for highways and transport, said: "Any changes to a speed limit would also have to be enforced, and the speaker directly before this one was complaining about speed calming measures and the impact they will have on parking and other matters.

"Clearly there are always winners and losers in any situation that involves change. This is why we are already updating our process, as announced at a previous council meeting, to enable local County Councillors to request speed limit reviews in conjunction with their communities.

"I would recommend any concerned residents contact their county councillors."
