A WEATHER warning has been issued for Malvern warning of thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon (June 10).

People have been warned about the potential for flooding and powercuts as thunderstorms are set to hit the town.

The Met Office has issued the yellow weather warning from 2pm until 9pm.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Whilst many places will be largely dry, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in some places on Saturday afternoon."

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and possibly even cancellations to rail services

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be temporarily lost."

It warned people not to drive through flooded roads and to find alternative routes instead.

Lightning can cause power surges, The Met Office warned and it urged people to unplug any non-essential appliances if they are not already using a surge protector.

It also told people to seek shelter during a thunderstorm if possible.

"When you hear thunder you are already within range of where the next ground flash may occur, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the centre of a storm."
