A MAN charged with attempted murder and sexual assault has had his case adjourned to assess whether he is 'fit to plead'.

Wearing a blue shirt and black trousers, Anthony Roberts of Amber Heights, Green Hill, Worcester, appeared to Court 3 at Worcester Crown Court on videolink from HMP Long Lartin.

At the start of the case Jason Aris, defending, explained Roberts would not be entering a plea at this stage.

Mr Aris explained the defendant's fitness to plead needed to be determined asking for an adjournment so that a psychiatrist the defence had instructed could carry out the assessment.

Judge Martin Jackson agreed to the adjournment telling Roberts the plea hearing would take place on July 17.

Stage dates, when prosecution and defence reveal evidence, were also set while a provisional date for a trial - if required - was set for October 9.

The judge told Roberts he was remanded in custody.

Raj Punia prosecuted during the hearing on Monday (May 5).

Roberts faces attempted murder and sexual assault charges as well as a charge of possession of a bladed article in a public place, linked to the same incident.

As we previously reported, police were called just after 2am on May 7 after a 71-year-old woman was attacked in Kleve Walk in the city centre near the River Severn.

The woman suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a critical condition.

In a recent update, the woman was described as in a stable condition.
