The primary schools in the Malvern Hills district where it is hardest to get a place have been revealed.

Families across Worcestershire found out last week which school their children will be starting at in September.

The county council says 93% of pupils will be heading to their first-choice school and that 98% received an offer from one of their top three choices.

But not all families are lucky enough to get their choice of primary school - with distance from the school the most common reason for refusal.

‘Allocation day’ data from the county council shows the number of on-time applicants refused a place at each school.

Only three schools in the Malvern area are classed as oversubscribed, which is when a school enrolls more pupils than its reported number of available places.

Six applicants were refused places at Malvern Parish Primary School, as were five applicants at Suckley Primary School and three at Wyche Primary School.

Tenbury Primary School refused places to five people, as did Eldersfield Lawn Primary School, near Tewkesbury.

Sarah Wilkins, director for education at Worcestershire County Council, said: “We know what a significant milestone starting a new school is, and it is great to see that so many children in Worcestershire will be starting at their preferred school this autumn.”

What to do if your child doesn’t have a place at your preferred school

If your child hasn’t been awarded a place at your preferred school, you can submit an appeal. These should be made to the School Admissions Team at Worcestershire County Council.

You can find more information by going to www.worcestershire.gov.uk/schooladmissions and downloading the Appeals Information Document.

The county council received 6,042 primary school applications, and 2,407 middle school applications this year, with 99% of them made via its website.

It said everyone who made an application for a primary school, first school or middle school place received an offer.
