PLANS to build a Travelodge in Malvern have largely been welcomed.

Politicians and business owners have shared their thoughts on the budget hotel chain’s plan to open in Malvern.

It would appear Malvern’s existing hotels are not too worried about this and have welcomed the potential influx of tourism the move may bring.

Nick Davies, owner of The Cottage in the Wood, said: “As an area of outstanding natural beauty, Malvern is the perfect destination for a staycation, weekend getaway or tranquil escape.

“Travelodge’s investment into new locations would have required careful consideration and serves as a positive indication of the town’s strong visitor numbers, the local economy will benefit from the ability for increased tourism so will be welcome by many local businesses.”

Steve Lloyd, owner of Copper Beech House bed and breakfast In Avenue Road, meanwhile has questioned whether it is what the town needs.

“In general I would say that it is not of huge concern but also we are pretty sure it is not needed in Malvern,” he said.

“There are already three or four hotels and over 30 B&Bs that are not full so there isn’t a need right now for more rooms.

“It will have an effect on the budget-independent places here as I am pretty sure that’s where Travelodge market their operations.

“As we are personally not a budget operation it isn’t direct competition for us.

“But the bigger picture is that Malvern needs extra investment in the town centre to attract and keep more people here.

“That will help the independent operations more and help to aid post-Covid recovery.”

While Mr Lloyd isn’t overly sold on the idea, Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, is excited about the plans.

She said: “Malvern has had some great news recently with the award of £20 million to enhance our tourism offering at Malvern Theatres and we are seeing some great new brands opening up on the high street.

“Any new hotel opening is welcome, whether by a chain operator or independent.

“I have been approached by Travelodge for a briefing on their plans and I look forward to hearing the detail about local jobs when it emerges.”

Deputy mayor, councillor Clive Hooper, added: “I would welcome the provision of Travelodge in the county and certainly here in Malvern, in principle, depending where they are located and details of the plans including parking provision and the effect it will have on traffic - all the usual planning concerns.

“It would help promote tourism, create jobs and be good for local businesses as tourists bring in trade. It would be welcomed.”

Malvern Hills District Council declined to comment.
