The new landlords of a Malvern pub are keen to build on its success after securing a five-star food hygiene rating.

Lewis Daley and Kelly Bennett took over at the New Inn in Lower Howsell Road in December.

The pub was given a score of four out of five in February but following a reinspection on Monday (March 27), the Food Standards Agency has given it top marks.

“We just want to get everything as good as we possibly can,” said Mr Daley.

“We were both born and bred in Malvern and have been getting a lot of support from the local community.”

The pair have both previously worked at the Bluebell Inn but were keen to take on the challenge of running a pub themselves.

“We wanted to get our ideas out there, put our own plans in place and show that we can run a pub,” said Mr Daley.

“The sales have been phenomenal since we got here - we’ve been doing two or three times what the pub was doing before, and that’s in the colder months - the summer is going to be bonkers.”

A big investment in new garden furniture by owners Marstons means the New Inn’s garden now seats 222 people. A kitchen extension is next on the landlords’ wish list.

The pub’s “bonkers” summer will get underway on Saturday, May 6, when it hosts a full day of coronation celebrations.

Guests will be able to enjoy the ceremony itself on a big screen and there’ll be live music from five local bands.

The Debbie Parry Band, Vo Fletcher, the Malvern Ukulele Club and Dublin Jacks will all be playing in the New Inn’s garden, with Mel & Him playing an evening gig inside the pub.

The free event will feature a barbecue, garden games for children and more. And both Malvern Ukulele Club’s performance and the day itself will also act as fundraisers for Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Details of more events, including children’s bouncy castle days and tribute acts to Elvis, Meatloaf and Freddie Mercury, can be found on the New Inn Lower Howsell Road Facebook page.
