A WORCESTERSHIRE village chippy has been named one of the best in the UK.

Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop, on the southern edge of the county, has been included on a list of the UK’s 50 best fish and chip takeaways.

It is the only chippy in the county to have made the cut and owner Lucy Cox could not be happier.

Mrs Cox, who owns the business alongside her husband Nathan, said: “It is an honour to be chosen to be in the top 50 chip shops in the UK, but not surprising given the hard work put in by everyone who works so hard here each and every single day to make it a success.”

The competition, now in its 11th year, was set up by trade publication Fry Magazine.

An anonymous judge sampled the food and assessed key aspects of the business, from cleanliness to staff knowledge and professionalism to social media presence.

With the pass mark set at 95 per cent, Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop, which is managed by Nick Sanders and deputy Charlotte Price, scored 99 per cent.

The mystery diner was particularly impressed by the quality of food, menu choice, the smart, professional and friendly staff, and the shop’s app.

“Succulent and tasty fish in the perfect crispy batter and I thoroughly enjoyed the quality of the chips,” said the mystery diner.

“All the staff were welcoming and very pleasant to myself and the other customers both when greeting and taking orders.

“It is difficult to see how what they do and how they do it could be improved.

“It certainly is one of the very best I have visited.

“Polite, cheerful and efficient. The staff are very good and customer orientated.

“The quality of the food is excellent. It does what it does exceptionally well.”

Reece Head, competition organiser, added: “Once again we’ve had another year where it’s simply got harder to operate a fish and chip business, with rising energy, labour and ingredient costs taking a heavy toll.

“It’s not easy but operators are working harder and smarter, staying ahead of changing tastes and behaviours and adapting accordingly.

“It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Bredon Village Fish and Chip Shop on being one of the UK’s 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways.

“They are pushing forwards while not losing sight of what makes the chippy so engrained in British culture - high quality, value for money food with great customer service and inviting surroundings.”
