A POPULAR toy shop in Upton is going to expand into a hardware buiness as well.

Ginger and Pickles Traditional Toys, of 2a New Street, is moving into the former Haywards of Tewksbury Building a hardware store, which was situated at 1-3 on New Street.

The toy shop is owned by husband-and-wife team Catherine and Patrick Badham, who will be transforming the building into a hardware shop and Ginger and Pickles Traditional Toys.

Mrs Badham said the move is incredibly exciting, and she hopes to have the business open for trading by Friday, March 10.

She said: "It is an incredibly exciting time, and we are really looking forward to opening at the new location.

"Right now, we are giving the shop some TLC ready for next week. We are a bit nervous, but we trust people know how important local shops are to communities and Upton is a particularly special community.

"Everyone around us in the town have been so supportive. We have a big family so this is very much a family business."

The couple are in the process of painting the exterior of the building ready for the proposed opening next week.

Haywards has been trading since 1820 and is the oldest company in Tewkesbury, currently managed and owned by Simon and Mark Hayward who are the seventh generation of the Hayward family.

The Upton-upon-Severn store was the business' second location, and Mrs Badham said the Haywards family has been "fully supportive" of the move.

Mrs Badham said: "The Haywards family have been fully supportive of us taking on the lease and are glad there will be hardware retained in the town.

"When Haywards first closed it was really sad news for the town. A close friend of ours was the person who recommended we enquire about moving into the building.

"At first we thought it just wasn't feasible, but with a bit of number crunching it became a possibility for us."
