A Worcestershire MP is not expecting a general election anytime soon, despite the resignation of the Prime Minister.

Liz Truss announced today that she would be stepping down as leader of the Conservative Party and PM.

A new PM is set to be put in place before the fiscal statement on October 31.

However, Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, has not yet indicated who she will be backing.

“We need to find a candidate who enjoys the backing of over 85 per cent of the Parliamentary party and we need to do it quickly," she said.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer demanded a general election “now” so that the nation can have “a chance at a fresh start”.

Without a general election, the Conservatives will be on their third prime minister on the mandate won by Boris Johnson in December 2019.

But Mrs Baldwin is still focused on 2024 and delivering the promises her party made in 2019.

She said: "We need to focus on delivering our 2019 manifesto pledges so that when there is a General Election in 2024 we can show the country that we have delivered on their priorities as well as getting through a pandemic and assisting our Ukrainian friends to push back the Russian invader.”
