Three people have been rushed to hospital following a late-night crash on the motorway.

Two cars collided on the M5 southbound in the early hours of this morning, closing the road for several hours.

The crash, shortly after midnight, took place between junctions eight and nine of the motorway and resulted in a huge emergency services presence and multiple people needing hospital treatment.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a two-car RTC on the southbound carriage of the M5, between junctions eight and nine, at 12:04am.

“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene.

“On arrival we discovered three patients.

“A man and woman from one of the cars were treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital on the same ambulance.

“A woman from the second car was also treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch.”

Meanwhile, a Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that five crews were sent to the scene.

They said: “Five Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews – two from Worcester, one from Droitwich, one from Hereford and one from Upton – were mobilised to an RTC on the M5 Southbound between junctions eight and nine.

“The incident involved two cars and there were three casualties, all of whom had been released from the vehicles before the arrival of the fire service.

“The casualties were handed over to the care of the ambulance service and the vehicles were made safe by fire service personnel.”

National Highways confirmed that all lanes of the M5 Southbound had reopened by 2:25am.

Gloucestershire Constabulary police officers also attended the scene, and the force has been approached for comment.
