PLANS to build four new houses on a street corner in Malvern have been met with considerable opposition from neighbours.

The site adjacent to number 25 Victoria Park Road has been earmarked as a site for new houses for a number of years, but new plans for four large properties have been slammed by nearby residents as "overdevelopment".

Plans were approved some years ago for two bungalows to be built on-site, but successive changes of ownership have seen the plans revised on a number of occasions.

The current plans, which were submitted in June this year by Castlethorpe Homes, are for four new homes, up from three in a previous application.

The current consultation into the plans expires on August 12, with a decision to be made by Malvern Hills District Council soon after.

Charles Penny, who lives nearby, said there were "strange and worrying" aspects to the plans.

In a 16-page submission to Malvern Hills District Council, he wrote: "It is difficult to understand how such an obvious intent to ignore the very essence of a conservation area, the lives of those that will be affected for many generations to come and the comments made to the previous proposal could possibly have the beginnings of collaboration of, so little bearing on, the planning authority.

"If approved, it will be a fatal blow for Malvern.

"It will be the beginning of many such moves towards creeping destruction of the Malvern environment that the whole country has come to respect, by developers from outside of the region whose only motivation must be profit, irrespective of the impact they leave in their wake for current and future generations of residents and visitors."

One of the concerns created by the proposals is the loss of the scenic view of the Malvern Hills in the distance.

There are also concerns over how new parking will be added to the site, with a Malvern stone wall running round the outside and some Victorian ironwork railings, which could be removed to allow for more parking.

Mr Penny called for the matter to come before the council's Southern Area Planning Committee, with previous plans for the site having been decided outside of committee using delegated powers.
