The Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company is set to return to Malvern next month.

After being absent from the Malvern stage for three years, the company will be returning to perform some Gilbert and Sullivan classics from September 8 - 10.

The company will be performing The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore and Iolanthe.

For this 2022 season, they will also be joined by the celebrated Opera Della Luna for two performances of HMS Pinafore.

The Pirates of Penzance, one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most iconic shows, will be directed by Sarah Helsby.

A spokesperson for the performance said: "Starring James Cleverton as the dashing Pirate King and Matthew Siveter as the Major General, The Pirates of Penzance sails into Malvern with a show packed with fun and frivolity.

"What could possibly go wrong with sentimental, swashbuckling pirates who are actually peers of the realm, a completely dotty Major General and a bumbling bunch of hapless policemen?"

The Pirates of Penzance will be performed at 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm on Friday, September 9.

Iolanthe, directed by John Savournin, will be performed at 7.30 pm on Thursday, September 8.

A spokesperson for this show said: "Iolanthe is a hilarious satirical fairy tale.

"Life in the fairy kingdom has been pretty miserable since Iolanthe was banished for marrying a mortal, forbidden by fairy law, but things start to look up when the Fairy Queen pardons her.

"This enchanting production stars Matthew Kellett as the Lord Chancellor and Meriel Cunningham as Iolanthe.

"W S Gilbert wrote his libretto for Iolanthe a hundred and forty years ago, ridiculing the hereditary peerage amongst many other things, and there are lines in it that could have been written yesterday."

The third and final show being performed is HMS Pinafore and the company is joined by Opera della Luna for these shows at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, September 10.

A spokesperson for this performance said: "To round off a fabulous three days of Gilbert and Sullivan, Opera della Luna entertain with their much-celebrated and much-loved production of HMS Pinafore.

"HMS Pinafore is one of the greatest successes of the G&S partnership, and in Opera della Luna’s hands, it becomes a fast-moving, totally delightful, and hilarious re-creation of the original hit.

"Gorgeous costumes and an ingenious and imaginative production make this a show not to be missed."
