THE newest supermarket in Malvern will open its doors in December, it has been revealed.

Aldi is building a new store in Grovewood Road, near Malvern Retail Park, with the supermarket brand saying it is on-track to open in December.

An Aldi spokesperson said: "Construction for our new Malvern store is progressing well as we move towards opening in December this year.

"This will create up to 30 jobs and enable local people to shop and save closer to home."

At present the site has mostly been cleared to prepare for the bulk of the building work.

Diggers and other heavy machinery can be seen on-site, with Aldi already recruiting for a number of roles for when the new store opens.

Early last month, signs went up advertising for roles including shop assistants and a store manager.

Training for the roles will take place at the Worcester branches of Aldi in Tybridge Street, Pheasant Street and Bath Road.

The new store was approved by Malvern Hills District Council in March after discussions over plans for the site.

The supermarket will be the first Aldi to open in Malvern and is expected to create around 30 jobs.

More than 200 supportive comments were submitted to the council by the public welcoming the plans.

Other supporters said it would give shoppers the chance to stay in Malvern rather than travelling to Worcester or Ledbury to buy food.

The proposed opening hours are 8am to 10pm between Monday and Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

A statement included with the application said: “Aldi has wanted to open a new store in Malvern for some time, and is delighted to have found an ideal site on Grovewood Road.

“A new store would provide local people with easier access to our popular, high quality, great value offer.

“The proposal will enhance local shopping choice, reduce the need to travel and create at least 40 new jobs.

“The delivery of an Aldi store on this site will provide a valuable facility to support the day-to-day needs of the existing and future residents of the area.

“The proposal will also reduce the need to travel further afield and keep shopping local, thereby supporting the local economy and helping to balance economic growth in the area.”
