THE wait is almost over for Pride to return to Malvern.

The annual festival which celebrates LGBTQ freedom is coming to the town this weekend, with a packed schedule of events throughout.

This week saw the pride flag raised in Malvern to mark the start of preparations for the festival, which is returning to the town for the first time since 2019.

Pride will see Malvern's Priory Park filled with entertainers, musicians, food and drink and other events on Saturday, July 30.

Kicking off at midday in Malvern, Pride has been supported by both the town and district councils, and mayor of Malvern Cllr Nick Houghton, a member of the Pride committee, said excitement was already building.

He said: "I am truly inspired that the local councils and local businesses are backing Malvern Pride, its great to see it back in the calendar having had to take a couple of years off due to the pandemic.

"I have spoken to many local residents and businesses and the support for the event has been amazing.

"I will be opening the event at midday and hope to see as many people as possible enjoy the event.

"As with other events held in the town it brings people together and shows support to our residents, our local businesses and shows what a welcoming place Malvern is to live work and play."

Along with the flags, which are flying throughout Malvern, a pair of rainbow benches have been installed in Priory Park to celebrate inclusion and diversity.

Both Malvern Town and Malvern Hills District Council have supported the festival financially, making it free to attend for all.

Market traders and shops in the town will also be exhibiting at the festival to show their support.

A Pride spokesperson said: "In 2019 Malvern presented it’s first ever Pride.

"The organisers have done an amazing job to ensure this is an event for everyone, for families, and embracing all that’s great about the LGBTQ community.

"The support shown by local businesses and entertainers has been amazing and we hope Malvern Pride 2022 brings many visitors from across the region and beyond."
