A TEAM of firefighters and friends have completed their third walking challenge in memory of a colleague who died from cancer.

Stu Crebbin died in March last year aged 46 after a 12-month battle with cancer.

He had previously taken part in a "Phoenix challege" walk with a team of friends over the Brecon Beacons.

Now, on July 9 and 10, the third such challenge was taken on by firefighter Spencer Jones and 32 colleagues from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

Battling the intense heat, the team trekked to raise money for the Firefighters Charity, which helps support firefighters and their families.

While the main team took on the peaks, family members and friends took on a second shorter trek to help the overall effort.

Spencer Jones, who organised the event, said: "It was hard going, but with lots of laughter and positivity the event was yet again great fun and a huge success.

"To date we have raised over £20,000. The continued support is fantastic, and will help the Fire Fighters Charity continue to deliver vital support to our fire service community.

"Stu was dedicated to raising funds for the Charity, which was very close to his heart, and supported him and his family through his final weeks.

"He was a highly popular and inspirational person, far beyond his beloved fire service.

"We’re honoured to have been able to continue his legacy so that other firefighters and their families can benefit.

"We hope to take on another big challenge next year."

Stu’s sister, Sam, couldn’t be present but congratulated the trekkers on their fantastic achievement and for paying their tributes to their friend in this way.

A Just Giving page has been set up inviting donations and sponsorship for the challenge.

Mr Crebbin was diagnosed with colon-cancer in April 2020, having to undertake intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions in the lead-up to the challenge.

Despite this, he completed the majority of the first challenge, finding purpose in walking and an escape from his illness.
