WE tried a 'gourmet' doner kebab at a new  city centre restaurant

German  Doner Kebab, in the Foregate, was offering kebabs for £1 a time at a special promotion on Saturday.

The management said some 800 people an hour went through its doors to pick up a bargain kebab between noon and 4pm.

We waited until the promotion was over to join early evening diners at the restaurant  which opened last month.

The restaurant, as you would hope  for a new establishment, was spotlessly clean  and we were greeted at the counter by our  friendly server Amrita who gave us the full run-down on the menu which includes both healthy and “dirty” options.

The staff had thankfully had a half  hour break after the afternoon madness and were busy preparing dishes behind the counter.

The menu included kebabs, burgers, nachos and paninis with vegetarian choices.

My friend, having already eaten a couple of hours earlier, opted for the chicken doner with fries,  cheese and jalapenos (£5.99)

He thoroughly enjoyed  the combination of chicken with melted cheese and said the meat was particularly flavoursome and fresh.

He washed his main down with a refreshing mango drink.

I’d not eaten since breakfast and had quite an appetite so opted for the Boss Box.

For £11.99 I was able to choose my type of kebab,  veggie and low calorie options were available,  fries, including curry and cheesy, a side of two spring rolls or four c chilli cheese bites and a soft drink.

Having never tried a traditional German kebab before,  I went for that option, with plain fries and the spring rolls.

I was suitably impressed when the box  arrived.

The handmade toasted bread was crammed full of chicken, beef and salad.

It tasted as good as it looked and I was hit by a taste sensation as I tucked in.

The meat was fresh, tasty and full of flavour and I was pleasantly surprised by  the refreshing salad, which is often a let down in other kebabs.

The spring rolls were top notch, hot, crisp and packed with meat and  veg.

The dish came with three signature sauces: garlic, spicy  and yoghurt.

We were both very impressed with the food and friendly service.
