The MP for Malvern claims Boris Johnson “made the big calls right” following the Prime Minister’s resignation as Conservative party leader.

But Harriett Baldwin said Mr Johnson had lost the trust of too many MPs, who had been asked to “defend the indefensible”.

Speaking after Mr Johnson’s resignation speech this afternoon, Mrs Baldwin said: “While I backed a different candidate for leader I acknowledge that the Prime Minister has made the big calls right and he delivered on his pledge to Get Brexit Done and defeat Corbyn.

“However, he has lost the trust of too many respected colleagues and it has been impossible to defend the indefensible when not given a straight answer.

“As I never served as a Minister in the current government I have not been in a position to resign from anything, but when Lord McDonald published his letter about Chris Pincher, I fed my views into the usual channels including [1922 Committee chairman] Sir Graham Brady.

“I welcome the Prime Minister’s decision today and thank him for his public service.

“The process of choosing a new leader from the talented ranks of our Parliamentary party will now begin and I will continue to focus on delivering for the people of West Worcestershire.”
