After he was stopped in a Mercedes, the 21-year-old had at least five chances to come clean after giving police a false name, posing as the man he had come to pick up from a night out in the city.

Williams ran red lights in Castle Street and The Tything, mounted a kerb to get away and reached speeds of 90mph.

He was jailed for 16 months at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, perverting the course of justice, driving with excess alcohol and driving without insurance.

Although no action was taken, Williams also failed a drug swipe for cocaine at the roadside. The drink-drive reading was  45mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, above the legal limit of 35mcg.

The incident began at 2.15am on December 19 last year. Williams, of The Avenue, Welland, gave the name of David Cutting at the roadside when stopped in Upton and repeated the lie at the station.

By the time police had realised their mistake, Williams had been released and Mr Cutting had already been charged with the offences.

Olivia Appleby, prosecuting, said officers lost track of Williams but details of the car were passed onto the control room.

A pursuit of Williams was authorised after he left junction 7 (Worcester South) and joined the A4440.

"At the time the defendant was observed travelling at approximately 90 miles per hour in a national speed limit area," she said.

Judge Martin Jackson, sentencing, said at the time of the offence Williams was already subject to two bans for driving with excess alcohol imposed on September 15, 2020 and for driving while disqualified and failing to stop after an accident, imposed on October 29, 2020."

He described Williams as showing 'a high degree of persistence in this deception'.

He added: "You tested positive for cocaine and one of the officers observed you were asleep in the back of the police car."

Judge Jackson said, by giving a false name, Williams had 'run the risk' of a conviction being recorded against Mr Cutting and potentially a warrant being issued for his arrest.

Judge Jackson banned Williams from driving for three years and eight months.

Williams must complete an extended driving test if he wants to get behind the wheel at the end of his ban.
