A Malvern grandmother who went surfing to celebrate her 90th birthday has died.

Jane Woodman passed away last Saturday (May 14) at the age of 96 surrounded by her family.

She had hit the headlines in 2015 after going body surfing at Croyde in north Devon the day before she turned 90.

Pat Pitt, Mrs Woodman’s daughter, said her mum’s appearance in the paper prompted a lot of people to get in touch.

“They couldn't believe she was still surfing at 90,” said Mrs Pitt.

Adventurous Mrs Woodman rode a horse for the first time at the age of 80 and went paragliding in Chamonix when she was 85.

She visited Croyde for a number of years with her family to go surfing and saw no reason to stop even as she approached her 90s.

“Sadly mum passed away last Saturday evening, very peacefully with family around,” said Mrs Pitt.

'A remarkable lady'

“We took her out earlier this year in her wheelchair to Worcester to see the swans on the River Severn, to Madresfield to see the daffodils on Daffodil Sunday and only three weeks ago to my home in Upper Welland, where she sat in the garden and could see the Malvern Hills.”

Mrs Woodman was born in Troon, Ayrshire in Scotland on August 7, 1925. She worked as a physiotherapist and lived in Exeter until moving to Malvern in 2014 to be nearer her family, living at Clarence Park in Malvern Link.

“She was a remarkable lady, always positive, liked everyone and had a lovely sense of humour,” said Mrs Pitt.

“She had Parkinson's and life was not easy towards the end, but if anyone asked her how she was, she would say ‘splendid thank you’.

Mr Pitt said her mum never complained and always thought the best of people.

“If anyone deserves to go to heaven, it’s her,” she said. Mrs Woodman leaves three daughters, Jill, Jenny and Pat, and two grandchildren, Maddie and Jason.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday June 9, at 12pm at Malvern Priory.
