A POPULAR community centre in Malvern held a special event marking 10 years since it was saved.

The Malvern Cube, which was the former Malvern Youth Club almost died out in 2012 before a last-minute lease was offered allowing it to survive.

Last weekend saw a party held for the Cube, with 125 people coming to mark 10 years since the Malvern Collective took charge of the building.

A spokesperson said: "It is 10 years to the day since the keys to the Malvern Youth Centre were given to the Malvern Collective, a passionate group of hard working, visionary local people, who succeeded in saving ‘the Youthie’ from closure."

Dr Jill Terry was a key member of this group and became chair of trustees for many years, renaming the building Malvern Cube and working to keep it run by the community and for the community.

May 1 say Dr Terry step down from her post as a trustee, though she is set to continue working with the youth team there.

The spokesperson added: "Today, Jill steps down from her post as Trustee for MYCT.

"We will all miss her enormously, but look forward to seeing her enjoying the Cube and continuing her work with the youth team."

The birthday celebration included a special ceilidh, along with cake and refreshments for those who attended.

The ceilidh was also done on the day the centre opene in 2012, with this one held to mark that anniversary.

In addition, there was also a retrospective exhibition with a film by Christian Finn and Tiffany Hosking about the history of the Albert Road North site, which opened in 1964 as Malvern Youth Centre.

A campaign to save the centre started in 2010, after Worcestershire County Council said it was shutting the doors.

Throughout 2011 the group campaigned and presented a petition of more than 2,000 signatures to the council.
