THE former Tourist Information Centre in Upton Upon Severn will be sold off.

This is after councillors agreed to move forward with plans to sell the High Street building.

Since the TIC moved its work to the Pepperpot, the building has been let out to different commercial tenants.

The upper floor offices have been empty for several years and are said to be in need of "significant investment" to bring them up to a lettable standard.

According to the council, the building was only bringing in around £3,700 per year, leading to it being named an "underperforming asset with no strategic value".

Because of this, the decision was taken to sell it off.

The public and press were excluded from the section of the meeting where the sale was discussed.

This was due to the nature of what was being discussed, namely that it was information relating to the financial or business affairs of any particular person.

This includes the authority holding that information.

GJS Dillon was appointed in August this year to sell the building, with a guide price of £125,000.

The council will now consider three bids for the site, which has seen a number of proposals for a change in use over the years.

One proposal was to turn it into a greengrocers' shop, with councillors discussing back then potential options for its future.

A vote in early 2012 agreed for the TIC to move across the road to the Pepperpot to save between £20,000 and £37,000 in costs.

Despite some opposition, councillors agreed it should move and the building be leased out.

At the time of its closure, three possible options were discussed for its future.

These were offering it out as commercial premises, relocating it and staffing it with volunteers.

The sale was discussed and approved at the Executive Committee meeting of Malvern Hills District Council on November 23.
