A WOMAN from Malvern is ending her year-long climate vigil after more than 11 months of meditation.

Satya Robyn began her vigil, sitting for an hour every day in silent meditation, last November, and her final day is approaching.

Mrs Robyn runs the Bright Earth Buddhist temple in Malvern with her husband Kaspa and works as a psychotherapist.

She will be sitting in her usual place opposite the post office in Great Malvern, where she has sat in snow, hail, wind, rain and heat over the last year.

Locals have been showing their support, with Mrs Robyn saying she has received many words of encouragement from passers-by.

She added: "I was motivated to act after finding out more about the climate and ecological emergency, and after learning about the lack of action being taken by government and by big corporations.

"We are often told that the answer is 'personal change' - recycle more, drive less often - but what I discovered is that our only hope lies in big system changes, which only our government and other governments around the world can put in place.

"It is great to try and live more lightly on the Earth, by eating less meat and dairy or flying less, but until there are big changes in the law, we are facing a catastrophic future for ourselves and for our children.

"I chose to sit in vigil for a year to mark COP26, a big climate change conference in Glasgow starting on October 31, where world leaders will try to agree about how they will reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.

"We need to keep the pressure on the government by letting them know how much people care about this issue.

"I believe that the British public are capable of great courage and sacrifice, and if the media tells the truth about the scale of the crisis, we can all start to come together and do what's necessary.

"It is still possible to turn the situation around, but time is running out."

After the end of October, Mrs Robyn and her husband will continue to run a weekly meditation for the Earth on Tuesdays at midday, in the same place.

Extinction Rebellion Malvern will also continue to meet to vigil every Saturday at midday.
