PLANS for more electric vehicle charging points in Malvern will go before councillors this week.

Members of Malvern Hills District Council's executive committee will discuss the plans on Tuesday night.

The plans call for the council to invest £50,000 in installing 20 new electric vehicle charging points.

The new charging points would cost around £112,500 with just over half of the money coming from government funding.

Currently the council has eight charging points in its Priory Road car park in Great Malvern.

If plans are approved, four will be installed at the Council House, six at Link Top, four in New Street, Upton and six in Tenbury Wells.

The Council has a commitment under both the five year plan and destination zero report to install electric charging points in its public car parks.

The new charging points will be part funded by the Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles, which aims to ensure on-street parking is not a barrier to owning an electric car.

OZEV will provide a grant of £63,504 towards the installations, with £50,000 remaining for the council to provide.

Malvern Conservative leader Cllr Jeremy Owenson welcomed the move, saying: "It is ridiculous that the Wychavon car park in Pershore has more electric charging points than all of the car parks in Malvern Hills District put together, so we absolutely welcome the increase in numbers, and encourage the council to concentrate on practical actions to save the environment."

The executive committee meets at 6pm on Tuesday, October 19.
