A six-year-old boy is walking 50 miles to raise money for refugees.

Lawrence Ayliffe-Brown decided to walk 50 miles in September after hearing about the plight of Afghan refugees on a radio news bulletin.

His mother, Louise Ayliffe, said: “He is very inquisitive so it led to a difficult conversation in which we had to explain the troubles in Afghanistan to a six-year-old.

“We do try to avoid having the news on in the background when he is around, as mainstream news channels are arguably not suitable for his age, but that being said, it is also very difficult to shelter him from global affairs.”

She added: “I don’t think it came as a surprise as such, because he is so kind and considerate, but we were amazed at the scale of the challenge he had set himself. I had to talk him down from 100 miles initially!

“As you can imagine, we are very proud of him for the massive effort he is making and would love him to be able to carry on raising as much money as possible.

“He is a very active child, but to have him walking most days does tire him out alongside his usual activities, and he certainly hasn’t shied away from this challenge.”

Although his mother says he has found the challenge more difficult since school restarted, Lawrence, a Cropthorne First School pupil from Offenham, remains unfazed.

He said: “It is easier than I expected it to be. I find the different walks interesting and enjoys going to new places.

“It is a really big problem and I felt that I needed to do something.”

Lawrence has walked 34 miles so far and his cricket club, Pershore, couldn’t be prouder of their young member.

Chris Ridings, junior cricket coordinator, said: “Lawrence is not only a wonderful cricketer but is an exceptional young person.

“As a community cricket club, we are so proud of Lawrence’s charity efforts.

“The club members are all enjoying following his updates and progress to 50 miles and wish him all the best of a successful campaign to raise as much money as possible to support those in need.”

He has so far raised £665 for Refugee Action.
