PLANS to compare the way LGBT people are treated in Malvern with other areas will be debated tonight.

Councillors in Malvern Hills District Council's executive Committee will discuss signing the authority up to the Stonewall UK Workplace Equality Index.

This means the council will be compared to other UK employers on their commitment to LGBTQ equality.

This follows a notice of motion by Cllr Kaleem Aksar, who called for the council to demonstrate its commitment to equality.

He said: "My intention on this is for the council to be leading by example to local residents and employers on LGBT equality by allowing scrutiny of the council on this issue.

"This is in the face of increasing discrimination against the community across the country, this makes this motion particularly important in my view."

If approved, the motion will see the council resolve to "demonstrate MHDC's leadership on workplace equality to businesses and residents in the district."

It will also examine the authority's performance on the Stonewall Index and identify areas where they can improve.

The notice of motion will be discussed at tonight's (September 21) meeting of the executive committee.
