A NEW micropub will be opening in Malvern after plans were backed by the council.

The micropub will open in the town’s Church Street taking over the building left empty by Mountain Warehouse when the store closed and relocated in November last year.

A total of eight jobs will be created after the proposals were approved by planners at Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC).

Several supportive comments were submitted to the council during public consultation.

One supporter of the venture said: “This sort of development will help to revitalise Malvern town centre and will the recently opened – and soon to open - establishments in Church Street.”

Another real ale drinker said he looked forward to visiting the new micropub.

“This is an excellent use of the property and will help to keep Malvern town centre alive and a great place to visit,” he said in a message of support to MHDC.

“As a real ale enthusiast, I will definitely be frequenting it. Good luck to the applicants!”

Approving the plans, officers supported an empty unit in Malvern town centre being brought back into use and welcomed the creation of new jobs.

The micropub will be run by Dean Cartwright who has previously founded Black Country based brewery Pig Iron Brewing Company and owned award-winning pub Weavers Real Ale House in Kidderminster.

The shop has recently been used as a showroom by the people behind nearby luxury care home Windsor Court.

The proposed opening times are 10am to midnight every day.

A statement included with the application said the new micropub would have an ‘old fashioned community club’ feel and serve a range of ales, ciders and a wide selection of gins.

“The principle is to be a pleasant environment in which people can enjoy good craft ales, ciders, wines, a couple of high-end lagers and 40-plus gins,” it said.

“The vision is to create a ‘living room away from home’ where customers will receive excellent service and good quality beer.

“There will be no amplified music, the micropub will be dog-friendly, and the food menu will offer customers cobs to eat.”
