AN election will be held in Ledbury to elect a new town councillor after a former mayor of the town left his role.

The town council announced a vacancy had opened up on Ledbury Town Council after the town's former mayor Cllr Daniel Vesma left the North Parish Ward.

Cllr Vesma, who served prior to the current mayor Cllr Andy Manns.

As a result, a notice of vacancy has been issued, inviting residents to fill the vacancy within 14 days (before July 28).

Since then Herefordshire Council has confirmed 10 signatures have been received in response to the vacancy, triggering a by-election.

In its notice of vacancy, Ledbury Town Council said: "Notice is hereby given that a casual vacancy is deemed to have occurred in the office of councillor for the Ledbury North Parish Ward following the resignation of Daniel Andris Vesma."

Rule five of the Local Elections (Parishes and Communities) (England and Wales) Rules 2006, provides that on a casual vacancy occurring in the office of Parish Ward councillor, an election to fill the vacancy shall be held if within fourteen days after the date of notice (i.e. no later than Wednesday, 28th July 2021)

If a request for an election is not received by the above deadline then Ledbury will co-opt a person to fill the vacancy as soon as practicable in accordance with the Local Elections (Parishes and Communities) Rules 1986.

If there is an election, it will take place no later than September 30.
