Fermanagh ladies are in last chance saloon territory in their fight to stay in Division Three.

Wicklow stand in their way and the Erne ladies will be hoping the result will favour them like the last time they met.

In last year’s Junior All-Ireland Final, Fermanagh won by three points.

Captain, Courteney Murphy, was an unused sub that day due to injury but she is well aware of the quality Wicklow have in their side such as Meadhbh Deeney and Marie Kealy.

But while there is recent history, Murphy knows the teams are at different stages in their development in the 2021 season.

“We played them twice last year, losing in the round-robin stage and then in the final. So it’s one-all,” said Murphy.

“We are familiar with them and their abilities and it is definitely not going to be an easy one on Sunday

“Hopefully we can bring the form from the final last year.”

This year in Division Three hasn’t went the way they would have wanted for Fermanagh as they remain winless, but Murphy believes they have shown glimpses in matches of the capability of the squad and is hoping for some more consistency come Sunday.

“It has been a disappointing league so far with the three defeats but we have seen in parts of those games our real potential.

“So I suppose it is kind of just bringing that into Sunday and hopefully getting a bit more consistency in our performance and that seeing us through the whole 60 minutes.

“I think definitely against Roscommon and Down more so we showed that we were able to compete in Division Three.”

A return to Division Four is not part of the plan for the Fermanagh ladies as they look to continue developing and Murphy knows that if they want to make any mark in the Intermediate championship they have to avoid the drop.

“We don’t want to be going back down to Division Four which is a tricky enough division to get back out of.

“Especially when we are playing Intermediate championship you want to be competing in a higher division and contesting against the bigger teams to test yourself because that is the only way you improve as footballers.”

Along with more consistency to their play, the Fermanagh defender knows that defensively Fermanagh will have to be better:

“We need to keep it a bit more solid so we aren’t conceding the scores we have been.

“We know ourselves the strength Wicklow have in their full-forward line.”

The pressure is on for Fermanagh and survival but Murphy feels that when the squad have been up against it they have come out fighting.

“It is a pressurised game but going on games from last year we have performed well in pressure games, so hopefully we can do that again on Sunday,” concluded the Fermanagh skipper.

The game will be played in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath on Sunday at 2pm.
