A TALENTED musician from Whitehaven is playing on the same bill as stars like Ed Sheeran in BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend of Live Music 2021.

Amber Strawbridge, 20, who goes under the moniker of Bored At My Grandma’s House, has been announced in the line-up for the showcase of musical talent which takes place online from May 28 to 31.

The former pupil of Whitehaven Academy, on Cleator Moor Road, and Keswick School Sixth Form, Vicarage Hill, will be appearing on the Friday night where she’ll be playing a song that was recorded live with a backing band.

Amber is performing in the section for up-and-coming artists from BBC Music Introducing, a platform which supports “unsigned, undiscovered, and under-the-radar UK talent” – selected by the corporation’s regional shows.

Amber is currently in her second year of studying music production at the Leeds Conservatoire and was first inspired to write and play music by rock bands like Wolf Alice.

She said: “I mainly did music as a hobby.

“Wolf Alice inspired me to buy a guitar and I started teaching myself.

“I started writing my own songs and the first one I did was recorded straight on to my phone.”
The Bored at My Grandma’s House name came about after coming home from travelling in Cambodia, where she taught English and helped with village projects.

She started recording the songs at her granny’s home in Whitehaven and upload them to SoundCloud.

On October 29 she’s hoping to do her first live set in Leeds in the Hyde Park Book Club venue in and hopes to tour in future when the coronavirus rules are further relaxed.
In February Amber released her first EP , called Sometimes I Forgot You’re Human Too, which sold like hotcakes, and which is due to be reissued.

The EP , in which Amber sang all the songs and played all the instruments, is inspired by bands like Slowdive and Alvvays, and showcases deals with topics like “humanity, nostalgia and the current refugee crisis”.
