A MAN has bid an emotional farewell to an intensive care unit after spending 74 days in the hospital battling coronavirus.

Andrew Galeckyj, 55, finally went home after two months in ITU at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital most of which he says he can barely remember.

The sales and project director suffered an infection in his lungs, resulting in a cavity and lost more than three stones muscle mass. He spent 18 days in an induced coma.

Mr Galeckyj said he is unable to recall most of his time there, due to the “intense antibiotics” he was given for the infection.

He said, “The doctors said to me, everything that could have possibly gone wrong, went wrong. I can’t imagine what my wife must have been going through - but I couldn’t remember a thing.”

He added: “When I came to, I felt delirious.

"It was hard to judge what was reality and what wasn’t. The medication made me have some really freaky dreams, so I was in a confused state. It took me four to five days to fully digest what happened to me.”

Mr Galeckyj, from Honeybourne, said his most emotional moment was when his nurse visited him towards the end of his stay.

He said, “The nurse started crying as he couldn’t believe I was alive. He said they nearly lost me three or four times and it made me cry too. I’m just so relieved and blessed I’ve managed to get through this period where many didn’t survive.”

Mr Galeckyj's ordeal began when his wife, Nicola Galeckyj, 52, a GP nurse, was diagnosed with the virus only four days after taking the vaccine. Despite their best efforts to stay apart and constant hand-washing, Andrew began experiencing symptoms only one week later.

He said, “I was admitted to Alexandra Hospital in Redditch only three days after that. They sent me home but two days later I felt like I couldn’t breathe.”

Due to his MS, Mr Galeckyj’s immune system was compromised which heightened his symptoms. After being admitted back to the ICU in Alexandra Hospital, he was transferred to the ITU at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on January 27 where doctors induced a coma whilst he was on ventilators.

He was discharged from Worcestershire Royal Hospital on April 12.
